Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra has been postponed to a date beyond early 2026

Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra is an upcoming single-player action-adventure game developed by Skydance New Media, a division of Skydance Media founded in 2019, and published by Plaion, which took on publishing duties in July 2024. The project is led by acclaimed writer and director Amy Hennig, known for her work on the Uncharted series and as a story consultant on Forspoken, with additional writing from Marc Bernardin and a musical score composed by Stephen Barton. Built using Unreal Engine 5, the game draws inspiration from the 2010 Marvel Comics limited series Captain America/Black Panther: Flags of Our Fathers, setting its narrative in Occupied Paris during World War II. Players control an ensemble cast of four playable characters: Steve Rogers (Captain America), voiced by Drew Moerlein; Azzuri (Black Panther), voiced by Khary Payton; Gabriel Jones, a member of the Howling Commandos, voiced by Marque Richardson; and Nanali, leader of the Wakandan Spy Network, voiced by Megalyn Echikunwoke. The story follows Captain America forming an uneasy alliance with Black Panther to thwart the rise of the terrorist organization Hydra, with supporting roles filled by actors like Joel Johnstone as Howard Stark, Lyne Renée as the original character Julie, and Janina Gavankar in an undisclosed part. The game was first teased at the D23 Expo in September 2022 and fully revealed at the Game Developers Conference in March 2024, showcasing its cinematic animations and ensemble focus.

Originally announced in October 2021 as Skydance New Media’s debut title, Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra was initially slated for a holiday 2025 release. However, in May 2025, the studio pushed the launch back to early 2026 to allow more time for polish. This marked the second significant delay, as earlier reports had speculated on a late 2023 window that never materialized due to the project’s ambitious scope. The game’s development has been marked by milestones like the confirmation of its writers in November 2021, after Bernardin spent a year crafting the narrative, and the voice cast reveal in March 2024.

In a recent announcement on November 7, 2025, Skydance New Media revealed yet another delay, shifting the release window beyond early 2026 with no new target date provided. The studio emphasized the game’s complexity in a statement on social media: “Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra is an ambitious project, and we are committed to ensuring it meets the level of quality that our team, players, and fans expect.” They further noted, “We’ve made the decision to shift our release window beyond 2026,” underscoring their dedication to delivering a high-caliber experience rather than rushing production. While specific reasons beyond the project’s scale were not detailed, the move aligns with industry trends where narrative-driven titles like this prioritize refinement over deadlines. Platforms for the game remain unconfirmed in the latest update, though it is expected to target PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S based on prior Unreal Engine 5 showcases. Fans awaiting this WWII-era Marvel epic will now have to exercise patience, as Skydance continues to build hype through trailers while focusing on elevating the game’s storytelling and gameplay mechanics.
