New Dead Rising Game is Reportedly in Development, Now Set In Hollywood

Capcom is reportedly developing a new Dead Rising game, which has been in the works since at least 2023 under the codename “Rec.” This will not be a remake or remaster, but a completely new entry in the zombie-slaying series. The game will bring back fan-favorite photojournalist Frank West as the protagonist, likely serving as a direct sequel to the original 2006 Dead Rising. Its story takes place sometime after the events of the first game but before Dead Rising 2, as Capcom works to revive the franchise following the success of Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster. The plot centers on a new zombie outbreak in Hollywood, mainly on a massive, enclosed movie studio lot where survivors, including actors and extras, have barricaded themselves. Among them is a girl searching for her missing sister, adding personal stakes to the chaos.

At the heart of the chaos is the main antagonist, an extravagant and unhinged film director obsessed with creating his “perfect movie.” He forces Frank and the other survivors to face twisted trials and scenarios, while sending Psychopath bosses to stop them. Early on, Frank rescues a survivor, only to discover that this person is actually the director’s right-hand assistant, carrying a bomb and being forced to film the carnage. Returning characters, including Isabela Keyes, help Frank confront a new strain of the zombie virus, keeping with the series’ tradition of eccentric villains and unusual survivor dynamics.

The gameplay keeps the core elements that Dead Rising fans love. This includes the tense time limit, represented by the director threatening to blow up parts of the studio if his demands aren’t met. Frank’s iconic camera also makes a return, letting players photograph the environment and uncover clues. Rescuing survivors is likely to be part of the experience as well, given their important role in the story. The game is said to feature roguelike-style elements while still offering the open-world, zombie-bashing freedom the series is known for. No platforms or release date have been officially announced, but based on Capcom’s usual AAA development cycle, the game could launch around 2027 and may support both PS5 and PS6. All of this information comes from unverified sources cited by MP1st, so it could change before Capcom makes an official announcement.
