The Alters is a unique single-player sci-fi survival and base-building game developed by 11 bit studios, the creators of This War of Mine and Frostpunk. In this deeply narrative-driven experience, players take on the role of Jan Dolski, the lone survivor of a crashed space expedition on a hostile planet. Faced with extreme environmental hazards, including deadly solar radiation, Jan must use a mysterious substance called Rapidium to create “Alters”—alternate versions of himself shaped by different life choices. These Alters help maintain a mobile base, gather resources, and ensure survival, while also forcing Jan to confront the psychological and moral complexities of interacting with versions of who he could have been. The game blends hard sci-fi with emotional storytelling and is built in Unreal Engine 5, launching for Windows PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S on June 13, 2025.

To run The Alters on PC, the game offers four performance tiers: Low, Medium, High, and Ultra. All tiers require Windows 10 or later, 64-bit operating systems and a 50 GB SSD for storage. Here’s a breakdown of each level:
Low Settings (Upscaled 1080p, 30 FPS)
This setting is designed for players with entry-level gaming PCs. You’ll need a GPU like the AMD Radeon RX 570 or NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 with at least 6 GB of video memory. For the CPU, the requirement is either an AMD Ryzen 5 1600 or Intel Core i7-6700. The RAM requirement is 16 GB. These specs will allow you to run the game at 30 FPS in upscaled 1080p, which is playable but not ideal for those seeking smooth or visually sharp gameplay.
Medium Settings (Upscaled 1080p, 60 FPS)
For better fluidity and responsiveness, medium settings target 60 FPS at upscaled 1080p resolution. The recommended GPUs at this level are the AMD Radeon RX 5600 XT or NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1600 series cards, again with 6+ GB of VRAM. The CPUs needed are the AMD Ryzen 5 3600 or Intel Core i7-7700, which are solid mid-range options. 16 GB of RAM and the same 50 GB SSD are also required. This setup is ideal for players who want smoother performance without cranking everything to the max.
High Settings (Upscaled 1080p, 60 FPS)
This tier continues to target 60 FPS at upscaled 1080p, but with higher-quality visuals. You’ll need a more powerful GPU like the AMD Radeon RX 6600 XT or NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070, each with 8+ GB of video memory. The CPU requirements increase to AMD Ryzen 7 5800X or Intel Core i7-8700K, which offer excellent processing power for both gameplay and multitasking. RAM remains at 16 GB, with the standard 50 GB SSD.
Ultra Settings (Upscaled 2160p, 60 FPS)
For the most immersive experience, Ultra settings allow you to play at 4K resolution (upscaled 2160p) with 60 FPS. This requires top-tier hardware, including GPUs like the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX or NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 Super, both with 16+ GB of VRAM. The CPU must be a high-end model like the AMD Ryzen 9 5900X or Intel Core i7-12700, and the RAM requirement increases to 32 GB. Storage remains at 50 GB on an SSD, but a high-speed NVMe SSD is recommended for faster load times.
