FX has officially ordered a limited anthology series adaptation of the popular Ubisoft video game franchise Far Cry, titled simply Far Cry, to be developed by acclaimed creators Noah Hawley—known for his work on Fargo and the recently renewed Alien: Earth—and Rob McElhenney, the co-creator of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and executive producer of the Emmy-winning Welcome to Wrexham. The project marks a significant collaboration between the two, with Hawley producing under his 26 Keys banner alongside Emilia Serrano, and McElhenney producing and starring through his More Better Productions with Jackie Cohn; additional executive producers include Nick Frenkel for 3 Arts Entertainment, John Campisi, and representatives from Ubisoft Film & Television such as Gerard Guillemot, Margaret Boykin, and Austin Dill, all under FX Productions. The series will stream on Hulu in the U.S. and Disney+ internationally, building on FX’s longstanding partnerships with both creators, who have collectively delivered six series and 32 seasons of television for the network.
In format, Far Cry is envisioned as an anthology, with each season featuring standalone stories set in new environments and populated by fresh casts of characters, while preserving the franchise’s core elements of first-person shootouts, expansive open-world playgrounds, intricate narratives, and unforgettable antagonists—much like the games that have attracted over 100 million unique players since the series debuted in 2004, with the most recent entry, Far Cry 6 (released in October 2021 and starring Giancarlo Esposito as the villainous Antón Castillo), highlighting its enduring appeal. Conceptually, the show aims to explore the nature of humanity through a chaotic, irreverent lens, offering big action storytelling that evolves annually, drawing direct inspiration from the anthology structure of both the Far Cry games and Hawley’s Fargo seasons. Hawley expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “What I love about the Far Cry game franchise is it’s an anthology. Each game is a variation of a theme, the same way each season of Fargo is a variation on a theme. To create a big action show that can change from year to year, while always exploring the nature of humanity through this complex and chaotic lens is a dream come true. I’m excited to partner with Rob and bring our shared irreverent, ambitious sensibility to the screen.” McElhenney echoed the sentiment, noting, “Getting to work alongside Noah Hawley is a dream realized. Ubisoft has been remarkably generous, entrusting us with one of the most iconic video-game worlds ever created. And through it all, my FX family continues to lift me up with their constant belief and support.
FX Entertainment President Nick Grad praised the union, saying, “FX has had magnificent partnerships with Rob McElhenney and Noah Hawley for a combined six series and 32 seasons of television, and we couldn’t be more excited that they are teaming up for Far Cry. I have no doubt that they will tell this story in a way that is original, gripping and wildly entertaining. We also want to thank our partners at Ubisoft for entrusting us with this beloved property.” While no further casting details beyond McElhenney’s involvement have been announced, the series represents Ubisoft’s continued expansion of its intellectual properties into live-action television, leveraging FX’s track record for bold, genre-bending adaptations.
