GPD MicroPC 2 Unveils New Core i3-N300 8-Core Processor

GPD, a leading innovator in ultra-portable computing, has just announced an exciting upgrade to its highly anticipated GPD MicroPC 2. Initially launched with the Intel N250 quad-core processor, the MicroPC 2 now offers a more powerful variant featuring the Intel Core i3-N300, an 8-core processor designed to deliver superior performance for professionals, tech enthusiasts, and students.

The GPD MicroPC 2, a successor to the cult-classic handheld computer from 2019, is a compact 2-in-1 device that blends the functionality of a laptop and tablet. With its 7-inch 1080p touchscreen, versatile T-shaped hinge, and extensive connectivity options, it’s designed for those who need a powerful, portable workstation. The addition of the Core i3-N300 processor elevates its capabilities, making it an even more compelling choice for users demanding enhanced multi-core performance.

The Intel Core i3-N300, based on Intel’s Alder Lake-N architecture, doubles the core and thread count of the N250, offering 8 cores and 8 threads with a maximum turbo frequency of 3.8 GHz and a 7W TDP (configurable up to 15W in the MicroPC 2). This upgrade translates to a roughly 30% improvement in multi-core performance, making it ideal for multitasking, light content creation, and demanding professional applications. While both processors feature Intel UHD Graphics with 32 Execution Units at 1.25 GHz, the i3-N300’s additional cores provide a noticeable edge in scenarios requiring parallel processing, such as data analysis or running multiple virtual machines.

Benchmarks shared by GPD and early reviews highlight the i3-N300’s capabilities. For instance, Geekbench 6 multi-core scores show a significant leap over the N250, with the i3-N300 achieving up to 28% higher performance in some tests. This makes the MicroPC 2 with the i3-N300 a stronger contender for users who need a pocket-sized device that can handle more intensive workloads without sacrificing portability.

The GPD MicroPC 2 retains the core features that made its predecessor a favorite among IT professionals and field engineers. Measuring 6.73 x 4.33 x 0.91 inches and weighing just 490 grams, it’s highly portable, fitting easily into a jacket pocket. The 7-inch 1080p IPS display, with 500 nits of brightness and Gorilla Glass 6 protection, supports 10-point multi-touch and can rotate 180 degrees to switch between laptop and tablet modes. A backlit QWERTY keyboard, optimized for thumb typing, and a right-hand trackpad with physical mouse buttons ensure usability in confined spaces.

Connectivity remains a standout feature, with the MicroPC 2 offering:

  • Two USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 ports (10 Gbps, supporting DisplayPort 1.4 for 4K@60Hz)

  • Two USB-A 3.2 Gen 2 ports (10 Gbps)

  • One HDMI 2.1 port (4K@60Hz)

  • One 2.5Gbps RJ45 Ethernet port

  • One microSD card slot (up to 2TB)

  • One 3.5mm audio jack

  • Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2

These ports allow the MicroPC 2 to drive up to three 4K monitors simultaneously, transforming it into a desktop workstation when needed. A side-mounted fingerprint sensor integrated with the power button adds secure and convenient login capabilities.

Both the N250 and i3-N300 models come equipped with 16GB of LPDDR5 RAM (4800 MHz) and a 512GB M.2 2280 NVMe SSD, which is user-replaceable and supports up to 4TB. The 27.5Wh battery supports 45W USB-C fast charging and bypass charging to preserve battery health. Battery life varies by usage: approximately 1.5-2 hours under heavy loads (e.g., Cinebench at maximum brightness) and 4-8 hours for lighter tasks like web browsing or document editing.

While the i3-N300 model consumes slightly more power due to its additional cores, early tests suggest comparable battery life to the N250 when TDP is optimized, with potential for up to 8 hours in low-intensity scenarios. Active cooling via a fan and heat pipe keeps temperatures in check, with a maximum recorded noise level of 55dB and a peak temperature of 53°C under full load.

The entry-level GPD MicroPC 2, featuring an Intel N250 processor, 16GB of RAM, and 512GB of storage, is priced at $495. The newer i3-N300 model, with identical memory and storage, costs $558. Backing a crowdfunding campaign carries inherent risks, which readers should carefully consider. GPD currently projects shipping to begin in September 2025.
