MSI Unveils MAX and EVO Series Motherboards, Equipped with Larger 64MB BIOS

MSI has explained the significance of the “MAX” and “EVO” suffixes for its refreshed AMD 800 series motherboards. The initial X870 and X870E boards were released on September 30, 2024, marking a notable milestone for the series.

At Gamescom 2025, MSI showcased its new lineup of X870E MAX motherboards, designed to support AMD’s latest Ryzen processors and next-generation technologies. According to MSI’s official announcements, both the X870E MAX and EVO variants feature an upgraded 64 MB BIOS ROM chip, doubling the capacity of traditional 32 MB chips. Chinese media reports indicate that this increased capacity supports onboard features like integrated network drivers and tools for optimizing user experience, minimizing the need for manual driver installation during setup.

The MAX line introduces an independent clock generator, enabling advanced overclocking by allowing real-time BCLK adjustments for enhanced performance. MSI’s MAX and EVO updates are part of a mid-cycle AMD platform refresh, aimed at boosting builder flexibility without requiring a new chipset. These updates will span various form factors, from compact ITX to full-size ATX boards.
