NVIDIA Rolls Out new Firmware Update for RTX 5060 Series GPUs to Tackle Blank Screen Crisis

The RTX 5060 and 5060 Ti GPUs are currently facing a widespread black screen issue, similar to problems seen across the entire RTX 50 series. Users have reported experiencing black screens during both high and low-load operations, with some systems even failing to display the BIOS screen on startup. In several cases, RTX 5060 Ti units appear to be completely non-functional, with some users only able to boot into safe mode or not at all. This issue is not tied to any specific workload or usage pattern, making it unpredictable and highly disruptive.

In response, NVIDIA recently released the UEFI Firmware Update Tool v2.0, which is designed to address black screen issues that occur specifically after a system reboot. However, this is not a comprehensive solution and will not help users who experience black screens immediately upon installation or on first boot. For unresolved cases, NVIDIA is asking users to submit crash dump files for further investigation. Some users have found that the GPU stops working once the driver is installed, while others have managed to reach the operating system only in safe mode.

In the release notes, NVIDIA also recommended a few steps in order to troubleshoot the problem as follows:
  • Completely power down your system before booting
  • Ensure you are using the latest SBIOS from your motherboard vendor
  • Ensure you are in UEFI boot mode and not Legacy/CSM
  • Boot using an alternate graphics source (secondary card or integrated graphics)
  • After powering on your system, wait for your operating system to load with the graphics driver installed

Once you have downloaded the tool, run it and follow the on-screen instructions. Ensure that all applications are closed before running the tool, and verify that no operating system updates are pending in the background. If you are experiencing issues in Legacy/CSM boot mode and your motherboard does not support UEFI boot mode, please contact the customer service of your graphics card manufacturer for a Legacy VBIOS update.
