Starfield to Launch on Playstation 5 Spring 2026, With a new Expansion

Starfield, Bethesda’s sci-fi RPG originally released in September 2023 as an Xbox Series X/S and PC exclusive, is reportedly set to launch on PlayStation 5 in Spring 2026. This shift follows Microsoft’s acquisition of Bethesda’s parent company, ZeniMax Media, and aligns with Microsoft’s evolving strategy to bring select first-party titles to competing platforms like the PS5 to maximize revenue, despite initial exclusivity promises. The decision to delay the PS5 release to 2026, rather than 2025 as some rumors suggested, stems partly from the disappointing sales of Starfield’s first expansion, Shattered Space, which launched in September 2024 and received a “mostly negative” user rating on Steam. The PS5 version is expected to coincide with the release of Starfield’s second, yet-to-be-revealed expansion, alongside quality-of-life updates to enhance the game’s appeal.

The move reflects Microsoft’s broader pivot toward multiplatform releases, as seen with titles like Sea of Thieves and Hi-Fi Rush, though it has sparked internal debate within Microsoft about diluting Xbox exclusivity. The Shattered Space expansion faced criticism for lacking significant new content, particularly for space exploration, which may have influenced Bethesda’s decision to bundle the PS5 launch with a more robust update to regain player interest. No official announcement is expected at Gamescom 2025, with a reveal more likely at a later event like The Game Awards in December 2025 or a standalone announcement. While Bethesda remains committed to supporting Starfield with annual story expansions, as stated by director Todd Howard, the game’s mixed reception and the underperformance of its first expansion have raised questions about its long-term success compared to Bethesda’s Fallout and Elder Scrolls franchises.
