The Last of Us Part II Remastered, introducing a groundbreaking “Chronological Experience” mode that reimagines the game’s intricate narrative. The Last of Us Part II Remastered Released on PlayStation 5 and PC via Patch 2.1.0 and Patch 1.5, respectively, this update allows players to experience the emotional and harrowing story of Ellie and Abby in a linear, chronological order, offering fresh perspectives on a tale originally crafted with a non-linear structure. Alongside this innovative mode, the update brings new trophies, unlockable skins, and performance enhancements, making it a compelling reason to revisit this critically acclaimed title.
The Last of Us Part II, originally released in 2020, is renowned for its complex narrative, weaving together the stories of Ellie and Abby through a tapestry of flashbacks and present-day events. This non-linear storytelling was a deliberate choice by Naughty Dog, designed to maximize the emotional impact of character motivations, revelations, and thematic beats. The approach, while polarizing for some, was lauded for its bold narrative structure, immersing players in a cycle of revenge and regret that unfolds across multiple timelines.
The new Chronological Experience mode reorders these events into a linear timeline, allowing players to follow Ellie and Abby’s journeys as they unfold sequentially. For example, players can now witness pivotal moments like Ellie receiving her guitar and learning to play it in a seamless flow, or observe the near-misses and parallels between Ellie and Abby’s paths through Seattle. Naughty Dog believes this mode offers “deeper insight into Part II’s narrative,” highlighting the interconnectedness of the characters’ actions and their emotional stakes.
Jonathon Dornbush, Naughty Dog’s Editorial Content Manager, emphasized the studio’s curiosity about this alternate presentation: “While this [non-linear] structure is very intentional and core to how our studio wanted Part II’s themes and narrative beats to impact players, we always wondered what it would be like to experience this story chronologically. And now finally, we can answer that question.”
However, Naughty Dog recommends that first-time players experience the original non-linear story as intended before diving into the Chronological mode, as the reshuffled narrative could alter the emotional weight of key reveals, such as Abby’s motivations for her actions early in the game.

To incentivize players to try this transformative approach, Naughty Dog has included rewards for completing the Chronological Experience. Finishing the mode unlocks two new character skins for the game’s roguelike No Return mode: Joel dressed as Nathan Drake and Tommy as Sam Drake, paying homage to Naughty Dog’s Uncharted series. These skins, available exclusively upon completing the chronological playthrough, are a nod to the studio’s 40th anniversary, celebrating its storied history. Additionally, new trophies tied to the Chronological mode offer players fresh challenges to conquer.
The update also includes a host of bug fixes and performance improvements for both PS5 and PC versions, ensuring a smoother experience across platforms. This collaborative effort between Naughty Dog and Nixxes Software underscores the technical care put into making the Chronological mode seamless, despite the complexity of reordering a narrative as meticulously crafted as The Last of Us Part II.
